The offering by Kirsty Pilkington, the result of many hours in Tasmanian forests predominantly during winter, reflects her passion for the preservation of her island state's threatened natural heritage. A sensual record of the beauty and connection between Woman and Mother Earth, Bare Winter is a photographic shift for Kirsty. Having spent years dedicated to the portrayal of loved dogs and other creatures through her Rappaw Prints greeting card range, Kirsty's desire to promote awareness of the majesty undergoing desecration in Tasmanian forests became paramount.Sadly, many of the trees featured in this collection have already been felled and beautiful fairylands laid to waste. It was while Kirsty was undertaking her Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in photography at the University of Tasmania that she invested her entire savings on a manual Hasselblad. It is with this camera that these remarkable photographs have been taken. The juxtaposition of female nudes amidst forest settings reflect an empathetic vulnerability. Eighty-two women willing to expose themselves in often freezing temperatures, all for the love of Australia's precious trees, has been integral to the to the creation of Bare Winter.
